Paleo: The Who, What and Why?

Paleolithic Diet: also called the paleo diet, caveman diet or stone-age diet. is based mainly on foods presumed to be available to paleolithic humans.[2] It includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, roots, meat, and organ meats[2] while excluding foods such as dairy products, grains, sugar, legumes, processed oils, salt, and alcohol or coffee.[1]

**Taken from Wikipedia**

The Paleo Diet, or lifestyle (that’s what I like to call it) can look complicated, but for me it really boils down into four simple words:

Just Eat Real Food (#JERF)

The words “caveman” or “stone-age diet” can be somewhat misleading, in my opinion. Some people try to argue that ‘eating like a caveman’ is totally unrealistic this day and age. And I tend to agree. They way we live has completely changed since then! So why try to emulate a roaming Neanderthal? For optimal health, the best food choices are real, natural, unprocessed foods that are more helpful to our bodies than harmful. Focusing on the foods, not words to describe Paleo is the most important thing to remember. It’s not about doing everything the cavemen did years ago, it’s about giving our bodies what it needs to be the healthiest it can be.

Let’s take a quick look at WHY there are inflammatory foods and anti-inflammatory foods in the first place! Over the past 200,000 years, humans have been able to best utilize whole, unprocessed foods, which include meat, plants and seafood. All of these types of foods have the valuable vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to survive and thrive on. Modern farming and agriculture has only been around for a mere 10,000 years. Which means our bodies haven’t had the time to biologically adapt to modern foods such as grains, sugar, wheat, veggie/seed oils and processed foods. This is a possible reason why there are so many diseases on the rise too!

So how do we make sense of all this information??

First, just like any other diet/lifestyle, there is no one size fits all approach to Paleo. Some individuals are very strict when it comes to their choices, some are a little more loose. Others chose to never have diary or sugar. Some people have a little dairy on occasion, or white potatoes and rice on occasion. It’s all about figuring out what works and doesn’t work for your body.

Regardless of the small nuances that people choose to partake in, the main principles remain the same. Chose whole, unprocessed meats, veggies and seafood. With the key idea here being nutrient density, the more nutrient rich foods a food is, the better. Also, regardless of the nuances, the foods avoided are the same; foods that cause inflammation or wreak havoc on our gut. There are several of these types that most people have issue with. Those include things that include gluten, legumes, sugar and grains. Another stupid easy paleo tip, avoiding the ‘foods’ that are not really ‘food’ at all is another good idea. You know what I’m talking about, the so called Frakenfoods that claim to have positive attributes, but don’t really at all. Many can be found in the center aisles at the grocery stores.

Many medical professionals have started to recognize (and it’s about time) the link between what you eat and how your body feels and reacts. Eating in an anti-inflammatory way can help your body recover from current issues you may be facing. This  can help prevent issues as well. Choosing to consume foods that are nutrient rich over highly processed foods can contribute to lower disease and chronic disease, higher energy levels, improved body composition and an overall improvement in health. Who doesn’t want all of that? Try these stupid easy paleo tips!

How do you know if Paleo is something you should try?

Good question! In my opinion, if you are feeling tired throughout the day, have bouts of low energy, are struggling with not feeling your best or not feeling well all of the time, then giving Paleo a try might be a good idea for you. I’m not saying it needs to be a 100% overnight change, but some people do work best that way. I’ve found through talking to others, that a gradual approach is a good approach. Switching to Paleo can be overwhelming! I get that, it was overwhelming for me too! Let’s talk a these stupid easy paleo tip. That’s why for some people making only a few changes at a time, and keeping everything manageable, is key.

Going gluten free is often times a good start. That is one of the bigger changes someone can make in their diet, so tackling that, is a great beginning. Many people ask, “isn’t that good enough?” While I say being gluten free is better than not, I think that sometimes going further can be very beneficial if you’re not seeing the changes you would have liked. I hope these stupid easy paleo tips have helped!

This is what came through during my meditation this morning.

I’ve been feeling so BEHIND lately..
That I’m not doing enough..
That progress isn’t happening fast enough..

But that’s a lie.
I’m right where I should be.

I needed this message today… maybe you do too?

This is how I slowly helped myself the most:
Making small changes to my life,
* Intentional awareness to my morning
* Noticing when I’m being mean to myself
* Noticing when I’m reactive or in a state of fight or flight..

Some “small” ideas for you too:
* don’t grab your phone first thing in the morning, take some deep breaths, think about how you want your day to go
* drink an extra glass of water (bonus if it’s in the morning too)
* get up and move every hour
* say something nice to yourself when you catch yourself being mean
* step outside for a few minutes a few times a day

Small changes add up to big steps forward,
don’t get fooled by these not being “enough”,
they absolutely are.

Wanna hear more about how Ive helped myself and my clients to lessen our MS symptoms so we feel better in our bodies?

I detail it in my chapter in Resilience Redefined.. comment “Book” and I’ll send you the link!!

You don’t always have to love the hard action you’re taking to reach your goals.

You just have to show up.

You can do this… keep going 🧡🧡

*after discerning there’s no *actual* issue (pain, injury, illness etc) preventing me from working out, only that I’m a toddler and don’t wanna.

Struggling to start with exercise?

Try this tip!!

Creating a new habit (any of them) necessitate us to become someone new, someone different than we were.

Because we’re trying to do something different after all.

This is gentle way of starting that identity shift process.

Become who you want to be in your mind first.

Does this help?
What other habits do you need help with? Let me know in the comments!!

It’s only fitting that I announce my 2nd book (along with 7 other authors) on my 14 year anniversary with MS.

This is a book that I would have loved to read early on in my journey.
It’s about how we moved through our diagnosis and came out the other side for the better.

““Resilience Redefined” is not just a collection of stories; it is a call to action. The authors challenge those living with an autoimmune disease to not only survive but to thrive”

So… drumroll please…

This is obvs one option of many on how to help yourself through these moments.

But when you’re stuck in negative worrying, don’t forget there can be a positive outcome too!

This is rewiring your brain in action.

You notice you’re doing something you always did,
Then do something different.

And boom! A new pathway is born.

It needs some love and attention to grow,
so keep practicing!

There’s so much buzz about everything needing to feel good if it’s right for you.

Sure, there’s a time and a place for alignment.

But, growth often happens in the uncomfortable moments.

Just a reminder.
Keep going.
