We’ve all been there.
We made a New Year’s Resolution that we are really excited about. We get whatever accessories are needed, we plan out what we will be doing and we are often running.
But how long do resolutions usually last?
Not that long.
And there’s a reason for this.
It doesn’t have to do with your own willpower or lack thereof. It has more to do with your brain, and your brain wanting to keep you safe and alive.
Your brain weighs 3 to 4 pounds but it uses an incredible amount of energy, 20% of your daily calories in fact. And your brain is a really efficient organ and it doesn’t like to use energy for no reason. Change takes energy, therefore our brain resists it because it does want to use more energy or waste energy.
To your brain, and subconscious mind, any change in routine is considered a threat. If you have watched my brain train Tuesday videos, you will remember that threat is a bad thing for our bodies and can induce symptoms like pain.
Now it’s awfully nice of our brains to be looking out for us like that right? But what happens when you actually do want to change something about your life for the better?
It sounds impossible, and may feel impossible, but it’s not.
When thinking about making a change in your routine do you want to start small.
I don’t mean picking one food group to eliminate or starting an in-depth exercise routine.
I mean really small.
For example, say you want to begin exercising three days a week. That’s a great goal! But also really scary to your brain.
A great starting place would be to pick one day a week where you schedule 5-10 minutes of exercise.
That’s it.
Once you have completed one day successfully, then you can begin increasing.
Most people think this is too small to make an actual difference. But quite the contrary. Keeping your changes small especially at first will help you go so much further in the end.
