Usually when you think of getting a diagnosis like Multiple Sclerosis, only negative things come to mind. Depression, anger, grief or sadness are some of the first emotions that might pop into your head when you think of a diagnosis like that. However, once the dust has settled and you have time to think about life and how the diagnosis has affected you on a greater scale, you might come to realize that there are some positive things that have happened to you because of the diagnosis.
I have definitely realized a few of these such things. Not only has MS helped me to become healthier than I ever have been, I have realize that getting a diagnosis of MS, has helped me put my priorities in order, has help me to realize what is actually important in life and help me to focus on things that I actually want to focus on.
Getting a diagnosis of MS, helped me to realize that Time is a precious commodity, and should not be wasted. There are many things I want to do and accomplish in life, and many of those require full use of my body. There are places I want to see, mountains I want to hike, oceans I want to swim. I don’t know how long I will have the use of my body, therefore MS has given me a renewed sense of urgency to accomplish my wish list.
It help me to cut a lot of drama and unnecessary baggage out of my life. Along the same lines as above, time is precious, and spending any energy on unnecessary drama or stress is useless. Yes, it happens now and again, because after all I can’t control everything. But it has certainly helped me to shift my perspective.
It also helped me start to focus on being the creator of my reality, focusing on why things were happening for me, not to me. This was a later shift, I think. One that took a lot of work to switch from victim mode to responsibility mode. But it was definitely a shift that had profound impacts.
I also asked my community what positive things MS has given them as well. These are some of the things they said:
“I’m really mindful of distancing myself from unnecessary chaos”
“It’s reminded me to relax more and take better care of myself”
